Gaisce Bronze Award Ceremony

On Wednesday 26th October, LáGaisce, we held our Gaisce Bronze Award ceremony where our Gaisce participants received their certificates and medals in recognition of the hard work, commitment and dedication they all put into completing the challenge.

Gaisce is a direct challenge from the President of Ireland to all young people and it gives them an opportunity to find their passion, get active and make a difference in their community.

Throughout this experience they challenged themselves, grew in confidence, met new people, made new friends, developed their interests and discovered new opportunities.

As part of the challenge areas which include physical recreation, personal skill and community involvement, they completed a variety of activities. From swimming, GAA, basketball, badminton and yoga, to knitting, learning an instrument and baking.

It has been wonderful to see them all helping out in their local communities by assisting in nursing homes, charity shops, tidy town committees, training their peers and giving their time in school at homework and library clubs. Volunteering and giving up free time is a fantastic thing to do and is invaluable to communities.

Even though the Adventure Journey wasn’t what we anticipated, we still got to undertake a hike in Glendalough and spend time in the outdoors discovering all that the garden of Ireland has to offer.

While the entire year group started this journey together, the PALs, Ms. Walsh, Mr. Ryan and the tutors are so proud of the students who persevered and completed the Award. Although the Bronze Gaisce journey is over now, there is an opportunity to go on and complete the Silver and/or Gold award.

And finally, a message from President Higgins “By taking part in the Gaisce programme, you have embraced the test that is at the heart of the Gaisce challenge; making a pact with yourself to set goals, and to pursue your achievement vigorously. This is never easy, as no noble task ever is. I want to convey my congratulations to every participant who has decided to embark on this journey and to all those who have seen the journey through to the end. Molaim sibh. Beir beannacht”. Well done to all involved.

U19 Boys Badminton

Well done to Cayden Elliott, Theo Mariyasingarayan, Reece Finnerty and Bogdan Rusu who opened their U19 Badminton campaign with a win over Blackrock College. Playing four singles and two doubles matches the boys came away with a very convincing 6-0 victory. It was a fantastic start to the league with two more group matches against Templecarrig and Belvedere College coming up after midterm. Well done lads!

2nd Year Boys Football

CCA's 2nd Year Gaelic Footballers travelled to Naas on Monday. It was in the Leinster Football Championship and Piper's Hill College of Naas stood in their way. CCA won the game on a score-line of 8-10 to 0-10. Some of the stand-out performers for CCA included midfielder Evan Rooney, center-forward Dylan Hyland, wing-back Rian Daye and center-back and captain Leighton Gahan. An honourable mention must also go to CCA's goalkeeper Jack Gummerson who pulled off some excellent saves between the posts. With two wins from two, it means that CCA have topped their group. They will march on into the next round of the South Leinster Championship with their home quarter-final clash taking place after the October mid-term break.

Athletics

Well done to all our athletes who took part in Cross Country in Avondale. In wet and muddy conditions, each student performed extremely well throughout a tough course. Special mention goes to our individual medal winners Lara Lawlor, Ryan McDonald, Eva Doyle, Ella Mackey, Angie Prendergast and Luke Fitzpatrick. In the team event our Senior Girls Ella Mackey, Angie Prendergast, Eva Doyle & Maddalena Denina won Gold, while our First Year boys, Ryan McDonald, Enda Leacy, Jake McKenna and Oscar Kelly brought home Silver. Well done to all the students.

One Good School

On Wednesday October 26th we were thrilled to welcome Ms. Hannah Tyrrell to CCA to celebrate the launch of our Jigsaw One Good School Programme. Ms. Tyrrell is a highly respected and accomplished athlete, having represented Ireland at Rugby 7s and 15s for the IRFU and has had success with the Dublin Senior Ladies Gaelic football team. She is an ambassador for Pieta House and spoke to our students about her sporting career and her own mental health journey. Ms. Tyrrell spoke of the importance of developing the skills to sustain our own mental health, and recognising when we need to reach out for additional care and support.

The One Good School programme has developed a shared responsibility across the whole school community, where parent, staff and student voice are sought, and a unique tailored programme that fits our students needs is devised and implemented. It will complement existing pastoral supports and form a valuable part of our wellbeing policy. There are evidence informed webinars, online courses and resources available for staff and parents on supporting youth mental health which are incredibly informative. Entrance Scholarship

Congratulations to Emily Little who received an Entrance Scholarship for Maynooth University. The annual Entrance Scholarship Ceremony recognises the academic achievements of first year students in their Leaving Certificate exams. Almost 90 students, including Emily, beginning their studies at Maynooth University are awarded €1,000 and a special souvenir for achieving 575 points or more in their Leaving Certificate examinations. Emily is currently studying Arts. Well done, Emily!
First Year Boys Football
Our First Year Boys had their 2nd match of the Wicklow championship on Thursday against St Kevin's of Dunlavin.
Just like their last game, it was a very entertaining game of football. We were much improved from our 1st game and started the game extremely well and built up a lead with the wind. Unfortunately, St Kevin's reeled us in at the end of the 2nd half and two late penalties and a late goal sealed the win for them. We were unlucky near the end but again everyone got to play and contributed to the game. The lads have improved each week in training and in games and we look forward to playing again after midterm.

Student Council Non-Uniform Day

Last week we held our first non-uniform day of the year where we raised €1595. Proceeds were being raised for St. Catherine's special school and the community of Creeslough. This week, members of our Students Council visited St. Catherine’s special school. Students got a tour of the school and had the opportunity to interact with students and see where the appreciated funds raised are spent.

Senior Drama

Auditions were underway during the week for our impending Senior Drama production this year. The students will be performing the Leaving Certificate play “Eclipsed” by Patricia Burke Brogan. Judging by the standard of the auditions, it promises to be an impressive affair! Thanks to all involved and especially to Ms. Nolan and Ms. Cummins for launching and leading the production. Best of luck everyone!

Soccer Success

Congratulations to our 6th Year student, Ryan Clarke, who was awarded with the Young Player of the Year Award for Newtown United F.C. What an amazing achievement for Ryan! We are all so proud of him.
