SCHOOL SHOW AT THE MERMAID THEATRE
The countdown to Coláiste Chraobh Abhann’s ninth annual musical production, ‘FOOTLOOSE’ is on – the show will run from Wednesday 11th to Friday 13th March inclusive. A musical about a teenager, Ren MacCormack, who gets a big dose of culture shock when he moves from big-city Boston to a small Southern town, it has really set our student rehearsals alight and we look forward to the show. Each year, Coláiste Chraobh Abhann’s musical provides our students with the opportunity to develop socially, personally and artistically by joining the cast of the chosen production. Cast members always remember the show as one of the highlights of their school lives and I know they cherish the memories for many years to come. Please contact the Mermaid Arts Centre to enquire about tickets on (01) 272 4030 for the show.
SENIOR CYCLE OPTIONS INFORMATION NIGHT
Many thanks to the parents and guardians who came to our Senior Cycle Information Night last Thursday, 26th February. The importance of making the correct choice for Senior Cycle makes this a key event in our school calendar. Parents had the opportunity to ask questions about the different options available to students and inform themselves fully of the different programmes of Leaving Cert preparation.
SUBJECT OPTIONS AFTERNOON
Well done to the 5th year LCVP students who organised a very successful ‘subject options afternoon’ for Third year and TY students to help them in making their subject choices for Senior Cycle. Each subject was showcased by students who are studying it at Senior Cycle, with junior students encouraged to ask questions and probe the relevance of each subject to their areas of career interest.
BOARD OF MANAGEMENT MEETING
A meeting of the Coláiste Chraobh Abhann Board of Management took place on Monday 2nd March. Many thanks to the members of our Board of Management for their continued support of our staff and students.
PHYSICS DAY AT TCD
Transition Year students Eoin Vines and Kevin Gillan attended a day of lectures in the Physics Department in Trinity College, Dublin, last week. The day is organised by TCD for senior school students who may have an interest in pursuing a degree in Physics, and allows them a ‘taster’ of being a Physics student at the college. Kevin and Eoin found the day very interesting and were delighted to report back to their classmates.
‘A LIFE LESS ORDINARY’ ARMY TALK
On Wednesday 28th January, Sergeants Walsh and Bunny from the Irish Defence Forces came to CCA to give Transition Year students a chance to find out about life in the Defence Forces. Sergeant Walsh gave an insight into what life is like overseas: the conditions soldiers endure and how they handle these conditions and often are an inspiration to their colleagues. Sergeant Bunny gave the students insight into life as a cadet. Students found it fascinating to hear about how life changes when joining the Defence Forces. The soldiers described how even small daily drills prepare them for war situations, and how they become physically and mentally fit and disciplined. Many thanks to the soldiers for their fascinating and very personal presentation.
VISIT TO NATIONAL CONCERT HALL
Fifth year music students, accompanied by their music teacher Ms Armstrong, went to the National Concert Hall on 24th of February to hear a performance of Berlioz Symphony Fantastique. It was a magnificent performance, directed by David Brophy, who also gave an analysis of the work for the students. The group also had the chance to visit the Long Room in Trinity College where they got to see the Brian Boru harp, an early Irish harp dating to the 14th or 15th century. Many thanks to Ms Armstrong for organising this trip.
INCOMING FIRST YEAR INTERVIEWS
Next year’s First Year students spent the afternoon at CCA last Wednesday for interviews as part of their transition to first year in September. Our prospective students got the chance to talk about their extra-curricular interests and help staff get to know them better in advance of next year.
