20th April 2012

We wish the very best of luck to our second year budding photographers, Peter Kinsella, Saoirse Yuan, Darren Gillespie and Aaron Kearney, who are finalists in the ‘Le Crunch’ art competition.  Entries were based around the theme of apples, and Peter and his fellow students' impressive work involves an art installation featuring their four heads ‘photoshopped’ onto a background of apples.  They are finalists in the Second Level category.  Finalists’ entries can be viewed on the competition website www.ouitolecrunch.com.

Work is continuing at Coláiste Chraobh Abhann in preparation for the annual Wicklow VEC environs competition, which will be judged shortly.  Our school has always been very well represented among the prize winners in this competition, which encourages school communities to create and showcase ways to enhance and improve the school environment for the benefit of all.

All Transition Year students will be taking part in a hike, as part of the annual Gaisce awards, next Thursday 26th and Friday 27th April, to Lough Dann.  Good luck to our students on this physically demanding but highly enjoyable trip.

We are delighted to announce the latest production from our drama group, which will be staged on 1st, 2nd and 3rd of May at Coláiste Chraobh Abhann.  Conor Black,  Neil Foot and Andrew Connaughton will star in Harold Pinter’s “The Dumb Waiter”.  This play was the inspiration for the film ‘In Bruges’ which starred Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.  It tells the story of two hit men waiting in a basement in Birmingham, for their orders to carry out their hit.  The play centres on the tension between the characters as they wait.  We look forward to another fantastic production from the drama group, who have brought us ‘One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ and ‘The Riddle Man’ in previous years. Tickets are €4 and the play will take place at 8pm at the school.

Well done to the Coláiste Chraobh Abhann Senior Camogie team on a fantastic game against Avondale Community College in the Senior B final last Thursday.  The CCA girls were leading at half time, but the scores didn’t come our way in the second half, and the final score was Avondale 4 – 6, CCA 2 – 6.

Preparations are underway for our annual graduation ceremony which will take place on May 14th.  Our sixth year students and several members of staff are involved in preparing the graduation ceremony, speeches, mementoes, certificates and the graduation yearbook.  This is a special time of year for staff and our final year students, who will get the opportunity to reflect on their time at Coláiste Chraobh Abhann.  We wish them well in their last term with us.

Our nominee scientists are preparing for their debut at this year’s “SciFest” science competition, which will be held in the Institute of Technology, Tallaght, on 9th May.  CCA has six projects in the competition, which cover a diverse range of science-related concepts, from chemistry in the kitchen to the physics of paper aeroplanes!  As part of the SciFest competition, each team must investigate their area of interest and present their findings to the judges.  We look forward to supporting our students at this prestigious event and hope they will gain a deeper understanding of the importance and relevance of science in our everyday lives.  Many thanks to Ms O’Gara who has helped students with this project

Twelve of our Transition Year student exchange students have just returned from a very enjoyable and educationally enriching trip to Wurzburg, Germany, part of our ongoing German exchange programme.  Students took part in school activities and outings with their host families. The benefits of experiencing another European culture through family, school and day-to-day life is a hugely informative experience for our Transition Year students, and will benefit them in many ways, not least of which will be to allow them to appreciate their role as European citizens and Irish school students. Many thanks to Ms Buckley, Ms Hudson and Mr Kennedy for all their work in organising the exchange.

Our parents’ council has organised a table quiz in aid of the school, which will take place in The Mill Room in Kilcoole on Thursday 3rd May at 8.30pm sharp.  A table of four will cost €20 and all are welcome.  Please contact the school for any further information.
