Our budding energy conservationists were extremely busy last week as it was ‘Energy week’ at Coláiste Chraobh Abhann, The students worked hard to publicise the importance of conserving energy, and being aware of how energy is lost and consumed in the school. Posters adorned the walls of our GP area, and students made a presentation on their findings to Wicklow Co. Council. The school is working towards its second green flag and is hugely committed to energy saving.
5TH YEAR TRIP TO UCD
Coláiste Chraobh Abhann’s Fifth year students got a ‘taster’ of college life last week when they went on a one day visit to UCD. Students were given a presentation on degrees offered by UCD, and then a tour of the extensive campus to give them an idea of what college life would be like. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and were very impressed by the wide range of courses and facilities on offer. We hope that our students have been inspired to work extra hard to ensure they will fulfil their potential for third level.
We are really proud of our Third year students, Christopher and Timothy Hopkins, who headed off to Sheffield this weekend as part of the Irish Junior Paralympics’ swimming team, for a two day competition. Christopher and Timothy train incredibly hard as swimmers and we congratulate them on their fantastic achievements in this sport.
The strains of music were heard on the corridors of Coláiste Chraobh Abhann last week as our Third and Sixth year students performed their Music Junior and Leaving Certificate practical exams. Our students had worked really hard with the help and support of Ms Armstrong for these exams. We wish them the very best of luck for their results and to all our Junior and Leaving Certificate students who are working hard for their exams.
Another packed week for TY! On Tuesday, students were enthralled by a visit to the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin, and also enjoyed a walking tour of the city. A broadcaster from East Coast Radio came in to talk to students about a career in broadcasting on Wednesday, and Thursday and Friday students took part in First Aid training. All Transition Year students will be on work experience from Monday 26th to Friday 30th March. We are delighted that our students have secured placements in such a varied number of career areas, including accounting, law, retailing and media. Our TY students are also starting preparations for their Exhibition Night which will take place in May.
TALK FOR SECOND YEARS
Our Second year students had a very absorbing and challenging talk from representatives of Alcoholics Anonymous last week. The talk focused on how to identify someone who is suffering from alcohol abuse, the problems that alcohol abuse causes for sufferers and those close to them, and ways to deal with the issue if it has been recognised. Thanks to Ms Leydon for organising this valuable visit to the school.
UNDER 15s SOCCER
Well done to our Boys’ U-15 soccer team who were narrowly beaten in the Wicklow/Wexford final last week. The match finished 2-2 after normal time and the teams could not be separated during extra time. A very tense penalty shootout followed, and the boys were beaten 8-7 in sudden death. It has been a great year for the team and they have represented the school excellently.
Sixth year students are meeting with their mentor teachers this week, to talk about their college choices and their upcoming Leaving Certificate exams. Students have found the mentoring programme – which matches students to teachers who have experience and qualifications in their career area of interest – very valuable as a way of getting advice and guidance on a one-to-one level when making such important decisions about their future.
FIFTH YEAR PREFECTS
Our Fifth year students are in the process of nominating next year’s prefects. Sixteen students will be nominated to these very privileged and important positions in our schools. All of our students are aware of the significance of the role of the prefects at Coláiste Chraobh Abhann in mentoring their fellow students and setting an example of excellence within the student body.
