Well done to all the students from First to Fifth year that travelled to DIT in Dublin last week to take part in this year’s SciFest competition. SciFest is a series of one-day science fairs for second-level students hosted in schools, at regional level in Institutes of Technology and finally in a national competition for the overall winners. Well done to Luke Byrne, Kevin Gillen, Callum Rea and Jesvin Joe Jimmy who won prizes at the event on behalf of Coláiste Chraobh Abhann. The projects submitted by CCA students both individually, and in groups of two or three ranged from investigating hiccups, understanding density, the science of yawning, lava lamps and ‘fruity electricity’ to name just a few! The CCA Science department are delighted that the students are getting a chance to investigate and practice the craft of a scientist, and what it is like to make scientific discoveries.
CCA STUDENT ON REP OF IRELAND SCHOOL SOCCER TEAM
Stephen McGuinness, a Sixth year student at our school, has received one of the highest sporting accolades possible for a young soccer player recently when he made his international soccer debut playing for the Republic of Ireland’s under 18 Schools team against New Zealand’s under 19 national team. The game took place at the Oscar Traynor grounds in Coolock, Dublin, and the Republic of Ireland came out top with a 2-1 win over the touring New Zealanders. We are very proud of Stephen’s achievements.
ANNUAL SCHOOL SPORTS DAY
Today is our annual school sports day, with a huge variety of events and activities taking place for students. There are 14 separate events taking place, three team events and 11 for individuals, ranging from the long puc, the three legged race, high jump, penalty kick, basketball shoot to the 100m, 400m and 1500m race. All events have separate junior and senior competition, and medals and trophies will be awarded to our winners. This is a great day for the whole school community to spend outdoors, enjoying our sports facilities and spending time together as a group. Many thanks to Ms Connolly for her organisation of the day.
GAEILGE INITIATIVE WITH NEWTOWN PRIMARY
As part of our on-going Irish links project with Newtown Primary school, Coláiste Chraobh Abhann’s teachers and Transition Year students ran a ‘Tráth na gCeist” with the students of Newtown primary last Friday. Thanks to Mr Rice and Ms Donnelly who organised the activity. A lot of fun was had by all.
HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY
Our Transition Year ‘Social Justice’ group held a Holocaust Memorial day last week. Representatives from the TY group visited tutor class groups in the morning and gave a brief talk about the significance of the Holocaust in modern history. The group also planted crocuses at small break at the memorial bench outside. Thanks to Ms French for organising this activity with the Social Justice group, which has carried out many interesting projects and investigations.
LEAVING AND JUNIOR CERTIFICATE PRACTICAL EXAMS
Well done to the many Third and Sixth year students who have completed further practical exams last week in the areas of Construction Studies and Junior Certificate Art. Many thanks to the teachers of these and other practical subjects who have spent so much time helping their students prepare for these important exams.
BON VOYAGE TO OUR LANGUAGE ASSISTANT
We wish our French language assistant, Martin Molitor, the very best in his studies for the rest of this academic year, and wish him a very bright future as a language teacher. Martin returned to Brussels this week after a very successful term as language assistant at CCA. His dedication and motivation were a huge help to students and he will be missed!
We are all looking forward to our annual prize day this Friday. This day is a big highlight of our school calendar, where senior and junior students are recognised for their contributions to the school and our community in a wide variety of prizes, including academic, sporting, leadership, entrepreneurship, civic, cultural, musical and artistic categories. More details and photos in next week’s paper!
BOARD OF MANAGEMENT MEETING
Coláiste Chraobh Abhann’s Board of Management held its last meeting of this school year on Monday. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of the committee for their hard work and commitment to the progress and stability of our school this year and into the future.
