OPEN NIGHT 2012
We look forward to opening our doors to welcome current and past students, parents, staff and members of our local community to our annual Open Night next Thursday, 25th October. This year, as Coláiste Chraobh Abhann celebrates its 10th year, will be a special night. Students and staff will be showcasing the range of academic, extra-curricular and sporting activities which take place in our school, as well as the work of our student council, our choir, dancing, drama and the many more roles our students play in their rich and diverse school life. We will be welcoming past pupils to visit their former school on this special anniversary, and look forward to a memorable evening. Please contact the school if you would like any further information about the evening on (01) 2870198 or email@example.com.
TRANSITION YEAR WORK EXPERIENCE
Our TY students have settled in to their first week of work experience this week. They are taking on a variety of job placements for two weeks, until the mid-term break. Students have worked hard to earn the chance to experience public and private sector job placements, in education, media, healthcare, accountancy, retail and many more. We hope that our TY students will have gained in many ways from this experience: to understand the pressures and demands, as well as the satisfactions, of the workplace, to have experienced different career areas which they wished to explore, and to appreciate the value and context of their senior cycle study, which will eventually lead, via third level, to the workplace. Many thanks to Ms Driver for her support of students in organising their placements, and to all the employers who facilitated our students’ learning experience during these weeks.
Last week our students celebrated National Maths Week at the school. There were various activities at the school each day, including 'Problem of the Day' where students could set themselves the challenge of solving a different maths-related problem each day. All winners received prizes for their solutions. This year, the school was also delighted to announce a special maths-related competition which gave three lucky winning students the chance to win a trip to the Google HQ in Dublin. The winners were set three maths problems which they had to solve. Well done to all those involved and we will report on their trip to Google shortly!
SCHOOLS TALENT SEARCH
Well done to all those students who took part in the Childline School's Talent Search. The performances were of a very high standard. Congratulations to all the following who have made it through to the County Semi-finals: More than a Dollar (Clare O'Toole, Laura Lynskey-McWatt, Amanda Brown & Alanna Lacey-Maguire) Jack Mohan, Ciara Kelly, Keith McCormack, Cian Gallagher, April Nyakudya, Little things in life (Anna Mudziejewska & Aoife Meagher) and Cia Walsh. We wish all our participants good luck for the future heats. The final will be televised from the Helix next March. Many thanks to Ms Armstrong for her support to the students in taking part in this competition.
Work is proceeding apace on preparations for this year’s ‘Poetry Aloud’ competition. A group of students from all years will travel to the National Library in Dublin to perform poems for the Poetry Aloud Competition next week. These students are all currently rehearsing a range of poems by Seamus Heaney, WB Yeats and Wilfred Owen which they will recite from memory. We hope that they will do well and qualify for the Leinster heats. Last year Anna Mudziejewska gave a winning performance that gained her first prize in her category
Work is also continuing on preparations for this year’s school musical, “All Shook Up”, based on the life and songs of Elvis Presley. New schedules have been issued to cast members and their rehearsals are taking shape. We are all really eager to see this great musical take shape. Well done to all the cast and Mr Kennedy for his hard work.
Our school will be closed for the annual autumn mid-term break from Monday 29th October to Friday 2nd November. We wish everyone a happy and healthy break and look forward to seeing our students on their return to school on Monday 5th November. Many thanks to staff, students and parents for their hard work since the beginning of this autumn term.
