8th March 2013

Go n’eirí linn! Seachtain Na Gaeilge 2013 has begun at Coláiste Chraobh Abhann, and there will be events going on for two weeks in recognition of this important event.  The Irish department are encouraging everybody, staff and students, to get involved and use the 'Cúpla Focal' to bring the language alive around the school. There will be events going on in Irish classes and some other classes over the course of the two weeks.  A ceilí is planned with Second year students, a comórtais postaeir agus filíocht and a poetry competition are being held and students will be treated to bodhrán music in the classroom. Many thanks to the Irish department for organising the events and encouraging us all to use our cúpla focal!

To link in as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge and as part of the ongoing Gaeilge initiative between Newtown Primary School and Coláiste Chraobh Abhann, the CCA Irish dancers, accompanied by Ms Armstrong, took part in a morning of demonstrating and performing traditional Irish dancing with the Fifth class students last week.  It was a hugely enjoyable activity for all involved.  Last Friday, Ms Armstrong and the CCA dancers took part in an Irish dancing activity with all the children of St Catherine’s Special National School in Newcastle.  Many thanks to Ms Armstrong for organising these events.

Rugby training continues with Ms Connolly on Tuesdays after school from 4-5pm.  Boys’ badminton is at lunchtime in the PE hall with Ms Downey.  The First Tee programme continues on Wednesdays after school with Mr Healy, and girls’ Gaelic football training with Ms Doyle takes place on Tuesday from 4-5pm.  Boys and girls basketball takes place after school on Wednesdays with Martin, our French assistant, and Ms Cummins.

Well done to our senior lady footballers who took part in the county blitz last week, beating Loreto Bray, Coláiste Chill Mhantáin and losing by one point to St Kevin’s, Dunlavin and Blessington Community College.  Laoch na hImeartha for CCA was Lydia Sinnott-Elliott who was simply outstanding in goals.  Fine contributions also from Lara Broughan, Jessica Scott, Sarah Kavanagh, Aisling McCabe and Aisling McDonald.  Caoimhe McHugh and Eva Plummer also got a goal each.  Well done to all involved and many thanks to Ms Donnelly for her huge support and encouragement in coaching the team.

All budding scientists at CCA are invited to the school’s Science Club, which takes place on Thursdays in F1 with Ms O’Gara.  All are welcome.  Applications have been sent in to IT Tallaght for this year’s entrants to the annual ‘SciFest’ competition.  Last year the school’s scientists brought home three prizes so we are hoping for another great result this year.

The Second year school tour to Paris is fast approaching.  This very memorable trip will take place at the beginning of the Easter holidays, with students and teachers departing from at Coláiste Chraobh Abhann on the morning of March 21st 2013. The trip will take in such sights as the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, a boat trip on the river Seine and of course the highlight of the trip, a day at Euro Disney.  Many thanks to Ms Smith, Second Year head, and the Second year tutor team, for their work in preparing for this trip.

We are eagerly awaiting the new drama production from our school’s own drama group, the CCA Players.  Every year the Players, under the direction of Mr Súilleabháin and Ms Hennessy, write, produce and stage a unique play starring CCA student actors.  The play is always a hugely successful event and we expect this year to be no different.  The play, titled ‘Burke and Hare’ tells the story of a couple of notorious serial killers from the 1800s.

Well done to our First year hurlers took part in the semi finals of the county indoor competition in Arklow recently. It was a very enjoyable day and with two draws and a narrow defeat we qualified for the finals. Well done to all the players for showing great skill and commitment. The panel was Kieron Byrne, Cameron Cosgrave, Brian Short, Lachlan Fleming, Marwan Machaalani, Patrick Byrne, Thomas Moorehouse, Dylan Doyle, Adam Cummins, Ronan O' Kelly, Matthew Byrne and Lee McMahon.  Many thanks to Mr Maher for his support and coaching of the team.

Many thanks to the parents of our students from the ASD unit who came to the Easter coffee afternoon organised by Ms Mitchell, last Thursday afternoon.  It was, as always, a great opportunity for parents to meet each other and learn about their child’s environment and learning at CCA.  Many thanks to Ms Mitchell for organising this event.

Many thanks to the incoming first year students and their parents who attended our interviews at the school on Wednesday 6th March.  The interviews were very successful, and are a crucial early step in our integration of First years into the school.  The students were asked about their extra-curricular interests and any questions or concerns they had were raised.  It was a great opportunity for parents and prospective students to take in the school atmosphere and become comfortable in what will be their new school environment.

Congratulations to all who took part in our annual Transition Year ‘Stay Awake’ which took place at CCA recently. TY students organised the event to support the Parents Council in raising money for the school musical. During the night, our 75 TY students and their German exchange students stayed awake for the full night. During the night they organised various activities such as a disco, sports and an interclass league which was won by 4NTT. The students had a very enjoyable night and many thanks to all the teachers that helped to supervise on the night.

Final preparations are being made for this year’s CCA school musical, ‘All Shook Up’, which will be performed in the Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray on Wednesday 13th, Thursday 14th and Friday 15th March 2013. Students and staff are looking forward to a great show. Tickets are available from the Mermaid box office, on (01) 2723140, at www.mermaidartscentre.ie and through the school. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
