Coláíste Chraobh Abhann Players are presenting the play Shadow of a Gunman by Seán O'Casey in the Newcastle Inn Theatre next week on Thursday 28th, Friday 29th and Saturday 30th April 2015.  The play is under the direction of English teachers Seán Ó Súilleabháin and Sharon Hennessy and the cast are drama students from both junior and senior classes of Coláiste Chraobh Abhann. The show promises to be a great success, with previous productions including One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Burke and Hare. We were delighted to welcome for the seventh consecutive year our German exchange students from Wurzburg, who spent the week at Coláíste Chraobh Abhann and with their host students and families who so generously looked after them.  The students spent several days at CCA shadowing their host student, along with many other activities: a cliff way in Bray, a bowling evening, a team-building evening at the school, a walking tour of Dublin city and more.  Many thanks to Ms Hudson and Mr Kennedy for welcoming our exchange partners.



Best of luck to the 6th year students who are just completing their French Leaving Cert oral exams this week.  Last week was the Irish orals and students performed really well in what is a very important part of the exam.  Many thanks to the teachers who took so much extra time to help students prepare.



Well done to everyone who took part in Charlesland Athletics last week.  It was a great success.  Especially well done to Troy Scully who came first in the under 15 800m race and first also in the under 15 High Jump.  Rebecca Molloy came first in the under 15 girls High Jump and first in the under 14 Long Jump.  Laoise Cullen came third in the under 17 Shot Putt and Alannah Melia came third in the under 14 100m race.  The CCA girls Tug of War team came first in their competition: the team were Sarah Hand, Hannah Cullen, Alexandra Keczmerka, Hetty Messitt, Helen Moorehouse and Alannah Melia.  In the 1 mile challenge, the winners were Troy Scully, Jack Doyle and Mikel Counihan.  The girls relay team also came third in the under 14 competition – they were Alannah Melia, Rebecca Molloy, Helen Moorehouse and Emily Treanor.  Many thanks to Ms Connolly for her support of our athletes.



Congratulations also to Alannah Melia of 1st year and Aoife Murtagh of 2nd year who won their Leinster final recently, with a score of 2-1 and who won their All-Ireland final over the Easter break, with a score of 2-1 also.  Well done girls!

The new Board of Management of Coláiste Chraobh Abhann will have its first meeting on 11th May, and the school community looks forward to working with its members.  They are: Nicola Lawless, Jennifer Whitmore and Shay Cullen of KWETB, CCA teachers Aoibheann O’Gara and Ruairi Farrell, parents’ representatives James Gilnagh and Paula Lynch.  There will also be two representatives of our wider community.



We are all looking forward to our annual school Sports Day, which will be held next Wednesday, 29th April.  This day is one of the highlights of the school calendar, with a huge variety of events and activities taking place for students.  There will be a host of events for teams and individuals, ranging from the long puc, the three legged race, tag rugby, badminton, high jump, penalty kick and a basketball shoot-out to soccer sixes and athletics, including a very hotly-contested 100m, 400m and 1500m race.  All events will have a separate junior and senior competition.  This will be a great day for the whole school community to spend outdoors, enjoying CCA’s sports facilities and spending time together as a group. 



Well done to our team of students who are now in charge of the CCA 2015 Credit Union.  They are as follows: Chairperson Ciara Kelly, Vice Chairperson Jessie Kenny, Secretary Clodagh Bradshaw and Assistant Secretary Shauna Murtagh, Financial Director Eimear Jordan, Marketing Director Kevin Gillan, Membership Directors Calma Rooney and Ava Condon, Oversight Committee Jack Bellamy and Sinead Roche and Nominations Committee Holly Martin and Aoife Meagher.



Congratulations to the 1st and 2nd year camogie team who won two games and lost one in the camogie blitz in Ballinakill last week.  There were star performances from captain Amy Byrne, Rachel Dutton, Hetty Messitt and Chloe and Megan Longmore.



We are delighted to announce our 2015 LGBT ‘Stand Up’ week which is running this week.  The week is an important part of our school calendar, highlighting an important awareness of LGBT members of our school community.  As part of the week, our GP area is hosting a very colourful display outlining support services for LGBT students in the Wicklow area.  TY students are speaking at all junior assemblies, outlining what LGBT week is about and why we want to raise awareness in CCA. Video clips from the ‘Stand Up’ support group are being shown during tutor time throughout the week. LGBT statistics are displayed on school monitors as well as quotes on inclusion and support groups available in our area.  There is a box placed at reception where students can place suggestions on how to prevent homophobic bullying and how to help further create LGBT awareness in the school. Teachers of SPHE and RE are focusing class discussions on LGBT issues and there will be a winner announced of our competitions run during the week to design a poster, badge and wristband.  Finally, students are being encouraged to paint their nails different colours for the week to raise awareness among their peers.  Many thanks to Ms Walsh and the SPHE team for organising the many events this week.
