PRIDE OF IRELAND AWARD WINNERS
Congratulations to Jimmy and Joe Murphy who received the Pride of Ireland ‘Young Carer of the Year’ award. The two students in 6th year have supported their family through illness while continuing to knuckle down in school. They attended the very prestigious ceremony on Monday night and featured on television last weekend. Well known singer Hozier presented the boys with their awards and they spent the evening with lots of Irish celebrities celebrating their award. Their classmates in 6KRE held a celebration to mark the occasion where they made a presentation to the Jimmy and Joe. The boy’s mother was guest of honour at our celebration. The entire school community are very proud of the two boys and their achievements.
Well done to the 26 students from 5th year who were invited by the President of Ireland Michael D Higgins to attend the credentials ceremony at Áras an Uachtaráin last week. Coláiste Chraobh Abhann were the only school invited and the students were afforded the opportunity to meet the President, his wife Sabina and the new ambassadors from Sudan, Chile, United Kingdom and Mexico. The students had tea with the President and heard the National Anthem while they received a Guard of Honour from the Army. It was a memorable day for our students.
Preparations are underway for this year’s annual ‘Open Night’ on Thursday September 22nd, where we welcome prospective and current parents and members of our community to visit our school. Students and staff will be showcasing the range of academic, extra-curricular and sporting activities which take place in our school, as well as the work of our student council, our choir, dancing, drama and the many more roles our students play in their rich and diverse school life.
The callbacks are currently taking place for the school musical, ‘Calamity Jane’, which will take place in the Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray from Wednesday March 8th to Friday March 10th 2017.
U15 BOYS SOCCER
A great win for the U15 Boys Soccer team last week, who beat Woodbrook College Bray on a scoreline of 6-3. The goals came from Jamie Murray (2), Dylan Fitzsimons (2), Jack Elliott and Jordan Brady. Man of the match on the day was Dylan Fitzsimons. Best of luck for the season ahead!
Following the excitement of the Junior Certificate results, all Transition Year students headed off on an overnight trip to Causey Farm in Co. Meath. Students enjoyed many fun filled activities including bog jumping, kayaking, archery, pizza making and team building tasks. Students thoroughly enjoyed the trip and established strong bonds with other students in their year group. Many thanks to their Year Head and Class Tutors who accompanied them.
HIGHER OPTIONS CONFERENCE
On Wednesday last, all sixth year students attended the Higher Options conference in the RDS in Dublin. This event afforded students with the opportunity to find out more about prospective college courses for next year. Many thanks to the teachers who accompanied them on the trip.
EUROPEAN LANGUAGES DAY
This year, Coláiste Chraobh Abhann is celebrating the European Day of Languages with several events, including projects on the different cultures represented in our school, music and film from European countries, a European-themed table quiz, in-class taste tests. We look forward to celebrating our multi-cultural environment. This day is an initiative by the Council of Europe to remind us of the importance of language learning, and to encourage learning outside as well as inside the classroom.
Coláiste Chraobh Abhann celebrates its annual ‘Diversity week’ this week. The week celebrates the diversity we have within our school community which we value very highly. Experiencing and working in a diverse setting is a key part of the personal growth of our students. We value every member of our school and recognise everyone’s differences as important. During this week there are a range of activities going on, including poster and poetry competitions, speeches at assembly and guest speakers.
Parents and guardians are reminded that school will close for students on Friday, September 23rd to facilitate a staff in-service on the new Junior Cycle.
