23rd September 2016

The annual sponsored 10K walk/run/sports activity day is taking place on Wednesday October 5th.  All students and staff will participate in this event and it is also hoped that many parents and members of the local community will join us on the day.  The students will follow two different routes.  Third and fourth year students will do the coastal walk to Greystones, while 1st and 2nd year students will do the coastal walk towards Newcastle.  The 10km run is open to 5th and 6th year students, who also have the option of taking part in a sports activity day in the school.  As part of the event, students are being asked to raise a minimum of €10 sponsorship from family and friends.  There will be a prize from the Parents Association for: (1) the largest individual sponsorship collected in each class in the school; (2) the largest individual sponsorship collected across the whole school and (3) the class that has collected the largest average sponsorship per student in the class.

The annual Maths Week will take place from October 3rd to 7th.  There will be plenty of activities taking place during the week to encourage our budding 'Einsteins' to put their Maths skills into practice.

Well done to Laoise Cullen in fifth year who came 4th in the Hammer Throw at the Junior European Clubs Cup in Portugal last weekend.  Laoise also achieved a new PB distance in this event.  Congratulations Laoise!

This year, Coláiste Chraobh Abhann is celebrating the European Day of Languages with several events, including projects on the different cultures represented in our school, music and film from European countries, a French-Spanish-Irish table quiz, in-class taste tests, tongue twisters, a poetry and short story competition and much more.  This day is an initiative by the Council of Europe to remind us of the importance of language learning, and to encourage learning outside as well as inside the classroom.

Congratulations to Chloe O Dea, Erika Burke and Eleanor Short who won their first interschool’s showjumping competition recently.  Students who are interested in competing on the team should contact Ms. Nolan.
