Weekly News 19th March

5th Years Return

We were delighted to have all of our 5th years return to the school building on Monday. A wonderful CCA atmosphere was palpable throughout the day. Well done to the students for their excellent compliance with all the COVID-19 preventative measures.

Senior Cycle Talk

A big thank you to past pupil Lee Turner who spoke with the 5th and 6th years during assembly this week. Lee spoke about his experience of his Leaving Certificate and gave advice to the students on the opportunities the Leaving Cert presents and how to get the most out of yourself for the two year cycle. His message was very powerful and we know the students gained a lot from what he said.

Transition Year News

TY Workshop Conradh na Gaeilge

Our Transition Years had a workshop run by Conradh na Gaeilge, who work to promote Irish throughout Ireland and around the world. Roisin from Conradh na Gaeilge talked about lots of ways that everyone can use Irish on a daily basis such as changing the language on your phone to Irish instead of English. There were also many interesting facts about the Irish language, including, that out of the 6,700 languages in the world, it is in the top 100 most spoken languages online. At the end of the workshop there was a tráth na gceist for everyone to get involved in. Thanks to Charlotte for the report.

Gaisce Motivational Presentation

A big thank you to Niall from the Gaisce Award who spoke to all of our Transition Year Students on Tuesday. All Transition Years are currently in the process of completing their award but lockdown and online learning has made it more difficult this year. Niall gave them ideas on what they can do to ensure they still complete it before the end of the year and how much of an achievement it will be to have completed the award, particularly this year.

TY Activity Day

TY students participated in an Activity Day on Friday 19th March. It started at 9:30am with a two and a half hour poetry workshop with Stephen Murray from Inspireland. During the workshop, Stephen spoke about his life and work as a poet. Students were given an insight into the skills of poetry writing and at the end, they all produced their own poetry.

After lunch, it was time for them to work up a sweat with Sam O’Shea, Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor. Sam put the students through their paces with an hour long class which included a dance cardio warm up, core exercises, lower body exercises, cardio work, a HIIT session, followed by strength and flexibility work and stretching.

Finally the day finished with a Hair and Personal Care Presentation with Ann O’Reilly from Rootine Hairdressing. Ann went through the importance of good hair and personal care and topics such as best hair practice, cuts, colour and diets.
