LCA Showcase

Last week we held our LCA Showcase for 3rd Years. Led by our LCA Coordinator Ms. Mc Cormack and members of our current LCA class, students got a flavour of what the programme entails and of the opportunities it can present for Senior Cycle. Lots of fantastic work was on display along with projects and tasks that form part of the course content.

Student Sporting Success

Congratulations to Michael Synnott, 2nd year, who was awarded player of the year for Newtown Gaa U15’s at the club juvenile presentation on Saturday.

Senior Boys Football

Hard luck to our Senior Footballers who lost to Pres Bray on a score line of 2-10 to 2-07. After a poor performance in the first half we were 7 points down. A much improved second half saw the lads battle back to within a point with a few minutes to go, with Joe Heatley & Josh Bishop scoring two excellent goals. Pres finished the stronger with 2 well worked points to close out the game. Best for CCA on the day were Leon Reynolds, Eanna Nolan, Joe Heatley & Louis Lynch Thomas. Well done to all the players who now prepare for a Leinster semi final.

Inside the Classroom

3rd Year Maths students got the opportunity to test their maths skills in a hands-on, practical activity. They learned how to use equipment such as clinometers and trundle wheels and worked together in teams to investigate how to use trigonometry to calculate the height of the goalposts.

ISTA Photograph competition

As part of Science week, students were given the opportunity to enter the ISTA competition under the heading of sustainability. Two of our students describe their pictures below.

Alejandro Perez Fernandez, 5th Year Student If we don´t pick up our own trash, animals will do it, with all its consequences. Researchers estimate that over one million animals die each year after becoming entrapped in or ingesting litter. Illegally dumped garbage can kill or stunt plant growth. Land animals are also impacted by littering. Poisoning from spoiled food, food wrappers and containers that can ingested or contaminated water can be consumed by these animals. Many items that are littered contain harmful chemicals that are manmade and toxic to living organisms. As you can see, we have to be very careful with littering.

Sam Given, 5th Year Student: The photograph I have taken relates back to the theme of sustainability through the form of nature. To be sustainable for the future we all need to start somewhere and I think that somewhere should be planting trees. In my mind the hand with the texture from a hedge holding a leaf shows the touch we have with nature. I used a technique called double exposure or multi exposure and it is achieved by taking two or more photos and combining them into one photo.

Enterprise Week

This week we celebrated Enterprise Week in CCA where we had a number of activities planned. There were activities for tutor time during the week including guess the slogan or the logo. 2nd and 3rd Year students took part in a very competitive Business themed quiz in the GP Area on Tuesday. 1st and 4th Year students are currently in the middle of their mini company journey. On Tuesday they all had a workshop with Charlotte from the local Enterprise office who discussed Marketing and Finance techniques. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions specific to their own mini companies. On Thursday, all TY students took part in their annual Christmas Market where they were given the chance to sell their products to members of the school community. On Friday, it was the 1st Year Business students turn to do the same. Well done to all who were involved in the jampacked week.
