Transition Year News

Gaisce: All of our Transition Year students take part in the President’s Gaisce award. As part of the community work component of the award, a number of our students have joined up with Newtown Youth Service to offer help to the local community. This includes walking pets, a friendly chat, delivering post and doing your shopping. Well done to the students for coming up with this initiative and we hope people feel comfortable reaching out for help if they need it.

Turkey Fundraiser – Well done to our Transition Year students Elana Munez and Ellie Hanway who recently organised a fundraiser in aid of earthquake victims in Turkey. Students were encouraged to wear ribbons to show support to the cause. The girls also sold ribbons and raised 362 euro which will help people who have lost their homes and belongings in the earthquake.

2nd Year Study Skills

Our second year students took part in an online study skills course recently. It was facilitated by Amazing Brains. Amongst what was covered, they learned about different methods of revision, ways of developing understanding and how to develop their long term memory. We hope this was beneficial to our students and that it will aid them in their revision work in advance of their Christmas tests.

Leaving Cert Applied Work Experience

Every November, our 5th Year Leaving Cert Applied students undertake 2 weeks of work experience. This is a compulsory component on the Leaving Cert Applied course where students get the opportunity to go out into the world of work to experience what working life is like. It helps build confidence and skills that they will need when they leave school and also helps to give them an idea as to what they career path they would like to follow. This year some of our students were lucky enough to secure work placements in places such as Tesco, Matt Brittons, Grand Clark Bakery, Eddie Byrnes mechanics, Grove Motors and others. We wish them well in their work placement.

Our Local Hero

All at Coláiste Chraobh Abhann are very proud of one of our 6th year students, Conor Power. Conor showed immense bravery and instinct last week when he was involved in the rescue of a woman who got in trouble out at sea in Greystones. His quick thinking and selfless nature helped to save a life. We are very proud to have him as our Head Boy and representing the school body and young people so well. Well done Conor!

Board of Management Meeting

The Board of Management meeting took place on Monday 16th November online from 7.00pm-9.00pm. The board members complimented the school reopening team on the mammoth task of reopening the school and wished everyone in the community well for the year ahead.
