Week of 19th April

Litter and Waste Awareness Week

This week, CCA celebrated Litter and Waste Awareness Week. This is an initiative which has been organised by our Green Schools’ Committee. Each day we had a number of activities and events for students to get involved. We had a “Let’s get drastic about plastic” webinar for our first year students where they learned lots of interesting facts about the detrimental effects of plastic on our environment. There were ideas for sustainable lunches shared with students as well as sustainable fashion choices. Students enjoyed a fast fashion webinar on Wednesday and a virtual visit from James Callery environmental awareness officer. We also launched our competition for our CCA Green Code and invited entries for the winning code which will be used in conjunction with the work of our committee going forward. Well done to all who got involved.

Microsoft Innovative Educator Programs:

The Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) programs recognise global educator visionaries who are using technology to pave the way for their peers for better learning and student outcomes. These are a variety of programs to help both educators who are just beginning this journey, as well as programs for educators who are leaders in innovative education. During the year all staff in CCA have been keeping abreast of the many changes in technology. All staff have started a journey by becoming a Microsoft Innovative Educator. MIEs use Microsoft tools in the classroom and have learned the fundamentals of some of these tools. This is the first step on the journey of joining a professional learning network of enthusiastic educators who come together to learn, share and grow. The staff of CCA have all received their MIE badge and have completed a variety of courses in the Microsoft Education Centre.

Transition Year News

On Thursday 17th April, our Transition Year students took part in a barista workshop. In the workshop, the students learnt all the positive things about becoming a barista and how their coffee machines work. The instructors also showed them how to make two types of coffee; a double shot espresso and a latte. The students then got to try some of the coffees. Thank you to Dublin Barista School who facilitated the workshop on the day.

Peer Mentor Showcase

Transition Year students were given the opportunity to apply to become a peer mentor for the next school year. Peer Mentors are 5th year students who lead and support first years in their transition to secondary school. The applicants had to submit a piece that showed what it would mean to them to be a peer mentor and they subsequently presented their submission to a selection committee. We had a large number of applicants this year and we were blown away by the effort and creativity that went into the submissions and the presentations. Well done to all involved.
