First Year Quiz
On Wednesday, Mr. Kenny ran a table quiz with the first years and the help of the peer mentors. The table quiz ran over Microsoft Teams with students grouped together in breakout rooms answering questions on different topics.
First Year Well-being initiatives
Last week the first years took part in a photography competition and steps challenge. In the photography competition there was excellent quality shown across all entries. There were three categories in the competition. Tom Gammell won overall photo, Nicole Little won Best Caption and Leyla Cranley won Best Nature themed photo. A large number of students also entered the steps challenge with Sarah Heatly, Ben Daly and Ben Synnott taking the top three spots. Well done all for participating.
This week the challenge for the first years are to write a review on their favourite book or movie and there is also a Keepy Uppies Challenge. Good luck to all.
Incoming First Years
On Thursday evening we hosted our online information evening for all incoming first years and their parents. The meeting was part of our extensive transition from primary to post primary education programme. We were delighted to meet parents and students of our 120 first years for the coming year to explain the next stage of the transition programme. It was great to see all the excited, smiling faces of our future students and we hope you got a flavour of what makes Coláiste Chraobh Abhann so special. We look forward to working with you and welcoming you in September.
Senior French Debate
Our senior French debating team fought hard in last night’s quarter final against Belvedere College in the prestigious Alliance Française Joutes Oratoires. Although not victorious, Lucy Shortt, Emily Little, Alannah McCabe and Jeremiah Scott were each outstanding. The French department are very proud of our students for taking part and getting to the quarter finals. A Special congratulations to Jeremiah for winning Best Speaker of the night.
CCA Random Act of Kindness
The CCA community participated in “Random Acts of Kindness Week” which followed on from the success of last years student council initiative. All students were asked to take part and to forward a picture of the kind acts to class tutors.
CCA Pause for Poetry
Students in TY, 5th and 6th year came together to celebrate the beauty and calm of words and music as they recited the words of “Don’t Quit” by John Green Whittier which was portrayed in a video on our social media channels. A huge thanks to Ms. Ward, Ms. O’Driscoll and the students for this initiative. Thanks also to Jeremiah Scott for the stunning drone camera work.
Trinity College Entrance Award
Congratulations to past pupil Lucy McCabe who has been awarded the Trinity College Dublin Entrance Exhibition Award as the incoming student with the highest points from their public exams from our school. We are very proud of Lucy and delighted that the hard work she put in over the years has been acknowledged. Well done Lucy!
Transition Year News
All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad
Well done to Transition Years Alex, Anna, Ciara, Ben, Theo, Sinead, Rebecca and Ben who took part in the first round of the All-Ireland Linguistics Olympiad on Monday. They had to decipher codes and patters in a variety of languages such as Swahili, Sanscrit or Thai while using logic and lateral thinking. This was a great opportunity for our TY students to challenge themselves and be involved in something new and exciting for our school.
Healthfest 2021
On Wednesday, our TY students took part in Healthfest 2021. Healthfest was an event tailored to teenagers, featuring experts in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and mental wellbeing. The event was hosted by Doireann Garrihy featuring Greg O’Shea, Dermot Whelan and Caoileann Murphy. The students learned about the importance of each food group and why mental well-being is just as important as physical well-being. It was a great opportunity for them to see and hear from people who have such insight into their chosen fields. The students came out with great advice such as choosing an activity they enjoy as they are more likely to follow through if it’s fun. They also learned that resilience looks different in everybody and that everybody deals with difficulties in life differently.
