Leinster Champions
A truly amazing season for our U15 boys soccer team culminated this week with a sensational performance in the Leinster U15s shield final in Wayside Celtics pitch. Coláiste Pobail Setanta were the opposition and made it a hard fought game. But as always our team spirit and hard work ethic shone through when it mattered.
Fantastic performances all round, but especially from captain Mason Melia who again grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and scored in the first half and also assisted Ryan Collins for his customary goal. We were deservedly 2-0 up at half time but thanks also to Joe Collins superstar goalkeeping and some last ditch defending of the highest calibre from Leo Reynolds, Regan Kelly, Seán Lawless, Callum Merriman, Mick Carroll and Jack Ryan. Together nothing got past them all day. It gave us a great basis to kick on in the second half and allow our creative players like Bailey C Boyle, Matthew Britton, Ryan Collins and Mason Melia to control things from there.
A special mention must go to our man of the match Seán Lawless who didn’t put a foot wrong all day. He was everywhere and they couldn’t get past him.
We must congratulate our whole squad who all 35 players have featured at one stage or another in helping us have the success we have had this year. Jake Robertson, Ben Synnott, Alex Doyle, Finian Hughes, Cathal O Toole and JJ Brady have featured from the bench a lot and always performed admirably when called upon.
Mr. Rice couldn’t be prouder of you and your efforts. Well done to for a great season and to a great team. 3-0 was the final scoreline. Leinster U15 champions 2022!
TY Fundraiser
Well done to Clodagh Jordan 4OCN for organising and leading an activity day for a group of 50 first years. Clodagh is currently completing the Dermot Early leadership programme through her local GAA club. Her main aim was to increase students' awareness of the defibrillators in the area and to raise money for the Irish heart foundation. She started the activity day off with a very informative talk followed by a variety of fun activities. Well done Clodagh!
TY Olympics
Transition year students ended their year with a fun filled student lead TY Olympics competition which saw each year group battle out for the winning title. Students nominated team players from each group to take part in activities which included soccer 6's, rounders, tug of war, fitness test challenges , basketball free throws, penalty shootouts and some fun races to finish off the day. The scores remained very tight all day with different groups taking the lead at different times. Congratulations to 4SNN who took home the title at the end of the day. A huge well done to Ashling Kennedy 4SNN and the PE department who lead this initiative. A brilliant day and a fantastic end to a great TY year.
TY Gaisce Walk
Well done to the Transition Year students who completed their Gaisce Award this week. The Gaisce Award is a challenge set by the President of Ireland to young people. They had to complete three challenge areas in physical skill, personal skill and community involvement. They also had to complete an adventure journey where the hiked the spinc in Glendalough and it culminated in a 12km loop of Kilcoole and Greystones on Monday. Well done to all involved!
Athletics
A massive well done to Amber Scully & Emma Surmova who competed in the Leinster Schools Track & Field Championship last week. Amber came 6th in the Inter Girls Steeplechase while Emma finished an amazing 2nd place in the Minor girls Shot Put. Emma narrowly missed out on 1st place by 1cm. She now goes on to compete in the All Ireland’s . Well done girls.
Head Boy and Head Girl
The position of Head Boy and Head Girl is an extremely important one in Coláiste Chraobh Abhann and is the most senior student role in our school. These students are the leaders of the student community and they are an important link between students and staff. They act as role models for other students. They also perform a variety of functions during the course of the year. This year our head boy and head girl Jeremiah and Shauna have performed their duties in an excellent efficient manner. We would like to thank them for their commitment shown during the year.
When choosing Head Boy and Girl the key qualities that we look for include the following; proven and potential leadership skills, contribution to the school through service and involvement in different groups, self-management, the ability to connect with and relate to younger students and the ability to be an excellent role model for the student body and school community.
It gives us great pleasure to announce for 2022-2023 school year our head boy and head girl in Coláiste Chraobh Abhann is Ryan Curran and Alexandra Adderley O'Brien. We look forward to working with the student leaders next year. This year in response to the growth of our student community we have introduced the role of deputy head boy and girl Jack Neill and Abbie Wills
5th and 6th Year Prize Day 2022
The CCA 5th and 6th Year Prize Days were held last week, where students from 5th to 6th year were awarded for their hard work, academic excellence and extra-curricular achievements throughout the year.
Students who excelled in a particular subject were awarded a medal of merit chosen by their teacher, while in 6th Year the overall best student from the year was awarded a subject plate in recognition of their hard work and academic excellence. The year’s sporting achievements were also recognised, with each year group awarding the Sports Person of the Year to a boy and girl who excelled in a sporting capacity and were chosen by the PE Department. The 5th Year Sports Person of the year went to Luke Fitzpatrick and the 6th Year awards went to JP Nolan and Eve Leacy.
The Rogha na Bliana award is a perpetual trophy presented to the boy and girl from each year group with teachers, tutors and Year Heads selecting the very best student for that particular year. The criteria considered for this very prestigious award include hardwork, school involvement, leadership and responsibility, kindness, respect and academic excellence. All of the students selected for Rogha na Bliana 2021 have displayed these traits throughout the year. Well done to Lorcan Timmons and Charlotte Nagle who received the awards for 5th Year. The TY and 6th Year Awards will be handed out on TY and 6th Year Graduation Nights. Thanks to the staff who helped organise and present the awards on the day and a special thanks to the hard work of Ms. Tarrant who organised and coordinated the entire event.
