How Many Miles To Babylon?
Set before and during World War I, Alec is the son of Anglo Irish parents, who leads a lonely and friendless childhood in a Big House estate in Co. Wicklow. Despite being forbidden by his domineering mother, Alec builds a friendship with the rebellious Jerry, a local Catholic stable boy who works on their land. The class division is accentuated by the division in rank when the two boys enter the war, Alec as an Officer, Jerry as a Private. Their friendship is put to the test, not only by the horrors of war, but by the uncompromising rules of social division.
